About us

CIBERSAM consists of 24 clinical, preclinical  and translational research groups, belonging to 8 Spanish Autonomous Regions. These groups, selected on a competitive basis from among the most productive in the country, are focused principally on the study of mental disorders such as depression, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder as well as anxiety disorders and mental illnesses in children and adolescents, or therapeutic innovation.

Our mission is to provide answers and solutions to better understand the etio-pathophysiology of mental disorders, improving the promotion of mental health, prevention and current treatments and thus improving the population’s quality of life. Therefore, we have adopted a translational approach and actively seek to unite and generate maximum research talent in groups who carry out their research work in hospitals, research centres and universities.

We believe that the mental health research of our country not only has a great deal to offer our European counterparts but also much to say about the priorities for investment in this field and we believe in our commitment to doing so. After propelling the "Madrid Declaration" in 2009, we accepted in 2010, the challenge of making the Roadmap for Mental Health Research in Europe with the idea of integrating and coordinating  such research in all EU countries (www.roamer-mh.org).

Since its inception in 2008, more than 400 collaborative projects have been undertaken, over 800 publications with an impact factor greater than 6,000 points have been published and 22 patents have been licensed. In 2011 more than 200 articles in the first quartile were published, over 70% of them being collaborative.

At present, CIBERSAM has a staff of 80 people as well as nearly 300 affiliated personnel and 80 contributors, divided into 24 research groups consortia plus a technical support unit.

Navigating around our website, you will be able to find more information about our areas of activity and our staff, as well as information on current research in Mental Health. We intend therefore to comply with what we believe to be one of our principles: to share information with the scientific community and society, by communicating the results of our work.
