Bipolar disorder

Bipolar Bipolar disorder is a serious and highly prevalent mental disease that constitutes a priority research objective for the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Salud Mental (CIBERSAM). It brings together the leading national research groups in this disease and makes it possible to join forces for progress in understanding the causes and treatment of the disease.



CIBERSAM Research in Bipolar Disorder
The overall objective of CIBERSAM in relation to this programme is:

- To determine the prevalence, incidence, comorbidity and disability associated with bipolar disorder
- To study a large and representative sample of bipolar patients in early stages of their illness (first episode) and the associated genetic and environmental factors
- To analyse the role of neurocognition and neuroimaging as endophenotype and as potentially treatable prognostic factor
- To validate psychometric instruments for use in bipolar disorder
- To investigate biomarkers, drugs and psychosocial interventions for use in bipolar disorder
