Therapeutic Innovation

The enormous cost caused by mental illnesses is due to the high incidence and chronicity of some of them, as well as to the low efficacy of the drugs used for their treatment. The Therapeutic Innovation programme is a transversal programme with high quality and international visibility and channels CIBERSAM's efforts in the identification of new targets and therapeutic strategies in order to improve existing treatments. The programme integrates basic and clinical groups and develops translational and back-translational research, also working on the improvement of experimental models of mental illness. The programme has a long tradition in the identification and development of new therapeutic strategies, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.

Lines of research

• Study of the mechanism of action of drugs active in the Central Nervous System. Identification of new therapeutic targets.
• Design of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools in experimental models of mental illness. Development of animal models and use of organoids, viral vectors, antagomiR, shRNA ....
• Design and evaluation of new pharmacological treatment strategies including nanotherapies and oligonucleotides.
• Design and evaluation of new non-pharmacological treatment strategies (digital strategies, neuromodulation, psychotherapies, etc).
• Development of independent clinical trials with these new strategies.
• Study of the etiopathogenesis and pathophysiology of psychiatric diseases, including genetic bases and development of new diagnostic tools, mainly based on biomarkers.
• Study of the neurobiological basis of resistance to treatment.
