Therapeutic Innovation

The enormous cost entailed by mental diseases is due to the high incidence and chronic nature of some of these and to the low effectiveness of the drugs used for their treatment. The Therapeutic Innovation programme is a high-quality transversal programme with international visibility and used for channelling the endeavours of the CIBERSAM in the identification of new targets and therapeutic strategies in order to improve existing treatments. The programme includes basic and clinical groups and carries out translational and back-translational research, also working on the improvement of experimental models of mental disease. The programme has a long tradition in the identification and development of new therapeutic strategies, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.

Lines of research

  • Study of the action mechanism of drugs active in the Central Nervous System. Identification of new therapeutic targets.
  • Design and evaluation of new pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment strategies.
  • Study of the physiopathology of psychiatric diseases, including genetic bases.
  • Design of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools in experimental models of mental disease.
  • Study of the neurobiological bases for resistance to treatments and action mechanism of new therapeutic strategies.
